the evolution of Confident Birthing i-advocacy

If you are a doula or childbirth educator, you are probably familiar with using acronyms to help parents navigate pregnancy and birth choices, particularly those choices that fall into the category of interventions. When I first started teaching in the late 1990’s, I found the acronym BRAND (below) in a Midwifery Today Journal. B - Benefits of suggested procedure/test/action; R - Risks of procedure/test/action; A - Alternatives available; N - Nothing… what will happen if no procedure/test/action is implemented; D - Decide I taught my Variations, Complications and Interventions class using this acronym for a couple of years. Then, in one of my classes, one of the dads (whose job was something like: “technology feedback and neuro-linguistic specialist” – seriously, I couldn’t make that up) pointed out to me that the...

Laboring in the Tub with an IV

Here is an option for laboring in the tub with an IV or Saline/Hep lock if the tub has a bar like the one in the photo For this to work, be sure to check which end of the tub has the faucet BEFORE the IV lock is placed. Welcome Baby Bridger

I met this lovely couple when they first took my Confident Birthing Class in 2009. While in that class they met Sheila Taylor, who was assisting me, and asked her to be their doula. The next year, both Sheila and Heather took my birth doula workshop and we have all been doula "sisters" ever since. For this birth, I had the honor of being back-up doula/photographer and I could not be more grateful. To see the love between this mother and father...

Welcome Baby Sawyer

We spend an entire class in Confident Birthing exploring the need to stay flexible about the birth. This couple got to put their flexibility to the test. Not only did they need the"back-up" doula (me), they ended up with a home birth instead of the birth center birth they planned. When they called me and told me of the need to stay in their home, I brought my birth tub which fit perfectly in their kitchen. They embraced their new game plan easily and had a beautiful birth...
